Kiruhura police officer arrested over missing gun

Kiruhura, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Rwizi regional police are investigating circumstances under which their own lost a gun from the armoury. Corporal Wilson Nuwagira from Sanga police station in Kiruhura district is alleged to have lost a gun from the armoury where he was keeping guard on Sunday.

Police spokesperson Fred Enanga confirmed the incident, but refuted media reports that unknown assailants had attacked the police station. Enanga told URN in an interview that the armoury had seven firearms while Nuwagira was on guard, but one of them went missing.

He explained that Nuwagira created commotion after discovering that the gun was missing. According to Enanga, the corporal was placed in custody and transferred to the regional police to help with further inquiries into the matter. He says the investigators are focusing on finding out whether Nuwagira gave the gun to robbers or it was stolen from the armoury due to negligence on duty.

Safari Mugyenyi, the LCIII dhairperson of Sanga town council and the head of security, says that Nuwagira signed out the gun, but failed to sign it back in the morning.

Edson Asaba Nkojo, the Kiruhura Resident District Commissioner said he was not aware of any missing gun in the district, noting that he was out of office. The incident happens in the wake of attacks on security installations in various parts of the country. The latest incident happened in Kapeeka where a UPDF soldier and an assailant were shot dead on Saturday night.
