Katwe police impersonator arrested

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Police are holding a man accused of masquerading as a police officer attached to Katwe police station in Kampala. Luke Owoyesigyire, the Deputy Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson identifies the suspect as Frank Rujeru Sabiti, Detective Assistant Superintendent of Police Kajjeru.

Owoyesigyire says the suspect was arrested on Tuesday evening after a man identified as Emmah Yonah Wovugira approached Kampala metropolitan police south headquarters in Katwe to consult on what can be done to an officer who fails to fulfill his obligations.

According to Wovugira, the suspect hired his vehicle UBD 662C, TX on June 5th 2020 at Shillings 130,000 per day and left a warrant card as security. He however failed to fulfill his obligation prompting Wovugira to report the matter. Upon receiving the warrant card from Wovugira, detectives consulted police headquarters Naguru to verify its authenticity.

The search indicated that the name was nonexistent in any police records. However, the number on the warrant card was later found to belong to a police constable attached to another unit with different names.

Owoyesigyire says the suspect who is locked up at Katwe police station faces face charges of impersonation and making police documents without authority.
