Kalungu man kills wife in bar brawl

Kalungu, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The police in Kalungu district are hunting for a man who allegedly killed his wife in a bar fight.

The incident occurred on Saturday at around 8 pm at Lubumba village in Lukaya town council. The suspect on the run is Remegio Ssempijja, 47, a resident of the same area.

It is alleged that Ssempijja reached his home at around 7 pm, but did not find his wife Hasfah Nassali, 40. He was told that she had gone to the bar to attend to some customers.

When Ssempijja reached the bar, he found the door locked which compelled him to think she was with another man. Ssempijja kicked the door open and immediately started a quarrel.

Suddenly, a fight erupted between them and in the process, Ssempijja hit Nassali on the head with a bottle. Nassali bled profusely from the deep cut she sustained on the head.

Vianney Birungi, the Officer in Charge of Lukaya police station says that Nassali died shortly after reaching Mukwano medical centre. According to Birungi, Ssempijja escaped shortly after the incident. He further adds that preliminary investigations indicate that Ssempijja accused Nassali of infidelity.

Geoffrey Bujingo, the Lubumba LC I chairperson says that he received a call from Ssempijja saying he was going to end his life. Bujingo adds that his attempt to persuade him not to commit suicide were unsuccessful since the call did not last long and Ssempijja switched off his phone.
