Joint security forces arrest 500 suspected criminals in Moroto

Moroto, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The joint security forces in Moroto municipality have arrested more than 500 suspected criminals. They were arrested during an operation that started at 4am and ended at 7am on Wednesday.

Major Isaac Oware, the UPDF 3rd Division Spokesperson said the operation that was carried out by the army and police follows intelligence information that cattle rustlers had left their hideouts in the bush and had camped in the municipality to rob and attack residents. The suspects were taken to Naitakwae playground for screening.

He said the arrested people will be screened and those found with criminal records will be charged.

“We know them, and we have the list of those who on our wanted list and the rest will be set free, “he said.

Michael Longole, the Karamoja Regional Police Spokesperson said there has been an increase in burglary and theft in Moroto.

According to Longole, the increased attacks in the municipality have forced the business community to close their premises as early as 7pm for fear of being attacked.

Ismail Mohamed, the Mayor of Moroto Municipality welcomed the operation saying it should continue so that people in the town are free from the criminal gangs.
