Hoima woman arrested for poisoning her baby to death

Hoima, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Police in Hoima is holding a woman on allegations of poisoning her own baby to death.

The suspect has been identified as Erivanesa Kabagire in her 20’s, a resident of Bwikya village in Bombo sub county, Hoima district.

It is alleged that on November 1, 2021, Kabagire prepared a chemical known as ambush pesticide that she served to her one and half year old baby boy.

She accused the child’s father who is yet to be identified of denying the child and not providing any support for the child.

After drinking the chemical, the baby became unconscious and as the child was being rushed to Kigorobya health center IV for medical attention, he died while still on the way.

Stephen Mwijakubi, the area LC1 chairperson told Uganda Radio Network in an interview that after the child’s death, he immediately alerted police who swung into action and arrested the child’s mother.

Julius Hakiza, the Albertine region police spokesperson says police rushed and picked the child’s body that was taken to Hoima city mortuary for postmortem.

According to Hakiza, the postmortem report indicates that the child was served with poison that eventually led to his death.

The body has now been handed over to the relatives for burial arrangements as the mother is detained at Hoima central police station on murder charges.
