Heavy deployment as lord mayoral aspirants seek nomination

Erias Luwkago-s Supporters waiting for him to arrive for nominations

Kampala, Uganda |  THE INDEPENDENT |  There is a heavy deployment of police personnel around the Electoral Commission offices in Ntinda ahead of the nomination of the Kampala Lord Mayoral candidates.

A police patrol vehicle, filled with police officers is packed in front of the entrance blocking access of non-authorised personnel. Entrance is, at the moment limited to aspirants and journalists, who are first scrutinised, while all the rest are advised to keep a safe distance, away from the nomination centre.

The commission is expecting musician Joseph Mayanja alias Jose Chameleon, Kampala Woman MP  Nabillah Naggayi Ssempala, who was endorsed by the National Unity Platform-NUP and Erias Lukwago from the Forum for Democratic Change. Two other candidates; Beatrice Kayanja, from the Democratic party and Daniel Kazibwe alias Raga Dee from the National Resistance Movement-NRM party have not yet signalled their presence.

However, some of the supporters of other aspirants at councillor level who were turned back and blocked from entering the nomination centre decried police actions saying it’s their right to accompany their candidates on such a memorable event.

One of Lukwago’s agents, the MP for Makindye East Ibrahim Kasozi expressed concern over the heavy deployment but urged police officers to act humanely.
