Gulu RDC bans charcoal trucks from district

Gulu, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Gulu Resident District Commissioner, Maj. Santos Okot Lapolo has banned charcoal trucks from driving through the district.

Lapolo, who doubles as the Gulu district coronavirus task force chairperson says that he has learnt that most of the charcoal trucks are also illegally ferrying people from other parts of the country and dumping them in Gulu which exposes residents to COVID-19 infection.

According to Lapolo, the action of the truck drivers violates the presidential guidelines on the prevention of the pandemic. He says to avoid danger no charcoal truck will be allowed to drive through Gulu district.

He has threatened to hold sub county and division leaders accountable once they allow charcoal trucks to pass through their areas of jurisdiction. Martin Ojara Mapenduzi, the Gulu district LC V Cchairperson says the ban on the trucks will stop outsiders from sneaking into the district.

Alfred Oluba, the Layibi division LC III chairperson in Gulu Municipality told URN in an interview that unidentified man from West Nile was dropped at custom corner on Tuesday night by a charcoal truck that drove towards Kampala.

He says the man who looked sickly was picked up by the Gulu district coronavirus task force team for testing. He says that ever since the president banned public transport, three people have been dumped in his division by truck drivers.

One of the district officials told URN on condition of anonymity that atleast ten charcoal trucks have been impounded by security and parked at Gulu district headquarters.
