Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Four people are in police custody in Kampala for selling and taking banned substances. They are Grant Ndugwa, Gerald Jangu, Peter Kaggwa and Bukenya Junior.

A team of police officers from Wilson road police post and Nakasero led by their commanders Isaac Akampulira and Severino Mwesigye respectively picked up the suspects in an operation in places like Wilson road, Arua park and Kinamwandu food corridor to crack down on criminal activities.

They were found pretending to sell merchandise such as phone covers, women handbags and earphones with marijuana and other drugs hidden under counters.

The officers also recovered knives, hammers and other sharp items, which police suspect they were using to terrorize people in the night.

The operation was prompted by the high number of thefts in the city center including phone snatching and pickpocketing.

The Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigire, said police is investigating the matter under SD 59/25/08/2021, and will present the suspects in court once the investigations are complete.

Drug consumption in Uganda can lead to a jail term of up to six months or one year or a fine depending on the substance consumed. The consumption of heroin and cocaine leads to a lengthier sentence of imprisonment while cannabis leads to a less severe sentence.
