FDC HOLDS SPECIAL DELEGATES’ CONFERENCE AT LUGOGO

By Edgar Tushabe Muhairwe

The FDC delegates’ conference is going on at the Lugogo main exhibition centre.  This special delegates sitting was called to choose new members of the National Executive Committee that will steer the party for the next five years including the voting of the party flag bearer in September.

Among the positions most contested is that of the party Secretary General (SG) and that of the party chairman. The outgoing office holders are Serere woman MP, Alice Alaso and Rubaga mayor Joyce Ssebugwawo respectively. Nandala Mafabi, a challenger of gen. Mugisha Muntu for the presidency in the November 2012 election is a top contender in the SG race that had pulled four contestants, two of which have withdrawn their candidature.

Nabila Nagayi Sempala, the Kampala woman MP, who was interested in the seat unceremoniously withdrew her interest accusing the electoral process of being sham. Writing on her Facebook wall, she vowed to appeal against the elections as she contends that they are sham. The FDC electoral commission Chairman Dan Mugarura said at the weekly a press conference held on Monday 08th of June, 2015 that Nabila suffered personality issues.  As for Otto, he stood down for Nandala when he got his time on the campaign platform, sending the conference in wild cheer.

On the post of chairmanship, Wandera Ogalo, Wasswa Birigwa, Massy-Moses Kasule, and Bbale Bwanika are vying.

The conference was however delayed by logistical challenges after delegates and the press failed to get accreditation cards that were not made by scheduled time. There was a slight scuffle at the entrance as some people insisted to be let in without accreditation cards, which the event organizers finally yielded too.

Several candidates have stepped down for their comrades in the campaign notable among them Patrick Oboi and Waffula Oguttu for Alice Alaso in the race for the Deputy President Eastern region, Odonga Otto stepped down too for Nandala on the SG position while Bulega Nkalubo pulled out for Joyce Ssebugwawo in the race for Deputy President central region.

The conference is still ongoing and the election results will be announced later in the evening.
