Entebbe schools to lose licences for flouting COVID-19 guidelines

Nabirye inspecting learners in the classroom to ensure compliance with SOPs.

Entebbe, Uganda |  THE INDEPENDENT | The Entebbe Municipality Inspector of School, Sarah Nabirye is considering writing to Ministry of Education and Sports to allow her to revoke the licenses of schools found flouting COVID 19 guidelines and those conducting non-candidate classes.

This followed an on-spot check conducted on Tuesday where she found more than 40 pupils attending classes at Gilgal Nursery and Primary school in Katabi town council.

According to Nabirye, only 16 candidates are registered for Primary Leaving Examinations-PLE at the school.

The school headteacher who didn’t want to speak to URN insisted that they were only teaching candidates and adhering to the Standard Operating Procedures-SOPs to contain the spread of COVID-19.

However, Nabirye couldn’t have any of this. She directed the headteacher to release non-candidate learners to return home and wait for normal lessons to resume.

During the inspection, Nabirye asked pupils multiple questions to ascertain whether they were indeed candidates, which they couldn’t answer.

Nabirye has pledged to extend the operation to other areas of Entebbe to ensure compliance with the COVID 19 guidelines.
