EC issues guidelines for nominating parliamentary candidates in Kampala

Kampala, Uganda |  THE INDEPENDENT |  The Kampala District Electoral Commission-EC office has set stringent guidelines for aspiring parliamentary candidates ahead of their nomination week. He says the guidelines stem from the challenges they observed in the nomination of local government candidates last week.

These include among others congestion and clashing by candidates at the nomination center and failure to enforce Covid19 preventive guidelines.  

Speaking to URN at the Ntinda EC Regional Offices, Frederick Muwaya, the Kampala District Returning Officer said to avoid confusion at the nomination center, all aspirants are expected to book indicating the day and time they wish to be nominated.

He says they have directed the aspirants to appear in person or send their agents to making the booking and use the same opportunity to present their documents for verification.

He says despite the fact that aspirants have an option of booking for their nomination by phone; it is highly recommended that they show up at the Commission offices or send their agent so as to get advice on how to improve their documentation. 

According to Muwaya, 160 aspirants picked expression of interest forms for nomination for the 10 parliamentary seats in Kampala. To ensure compliance with Covid19 guidelines, Muwaya, says each aspirant will be escorted by three people including a proposer, seconder and relative of candidate’s choice.

 He warned the aspirants against showing up for nomination with a huge crowd, saying it is time wasting and may lead to clashes with Police.
