Dar es Salaam | THE INDEPENDENT | President Samia Suluhu Hassan has today announced that Tanzania will come out of isolation and take a new direction in the battle against COVID-19. She also ordered the lifting of a ban on several media houses.

“I intend to form a committee of experts, to look at the issue of COVID-19 in its breadth. Look at the remedies that they say will help us, in its entirety professionally and then advise the Government,” Suluhu told government officials at State House today.

We cannot isolate ourselves as an island, and we cannot also simply accept what is brought without doing our own research,” she added.

It is now nearly a year since her predecessor John Pombe Magufuli stopped the country from sharing its COVID-19 data, and said Tanzania would use home grown and not World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations to halt the pandemic. Magufuli died last month, reportedly due to heart complications.

Suluhu was today swearing in new Permanent Secretaries and heads of several government institutions including Ports Authority, NSSF and the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA)

On the media outlets, she told the new head of the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority and Ministry of Information that, “I am told you revoked licenses of some media outlets, including some online television stations. You should lift the ban but tell them to follow the law and government guidelines.”
