Beijing, China | TECH NEWS | Xiaomi has unveiled the REDMI 17 Series, the latest generation of its budget smartphone lineup, introducing two models: the REDMI 17 and the REDMI 17 5G.
The company said the series is built around battery life, a large display and everyday durability, positioning the phones as dependable devices at entry-level prices.
Battery capacity leads the pitch. Both models carry a 7,500mAh (typical) battery with 45W turbo charging and 22.5W wired reverse charging, which allows the phone to charge other compatible devices by cable. According to Xiaomi’s internal lab tests, the REDMI 17 delivers up to 28 hours of video playback, 91 hours of music playback, 46 hours of calling or 12 hours of video recording. The REDMI 17 5G is rated at up to 28 hours of 1080p local video playback, 109 hours of music playback with Bluetooth earphones, 53 hours of calling or 10 hours of 1080p video recording. Xiaomi notes that actual results may vary and advises buyers to check with local sellers on whether a charger is included in the box.
On durability, the display is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 7i, which Xiaomi says improves scratch and drop resistance. Both phones carry an IP64 rating for dust and water resistance, covering splashes rather than submersion, and feature Wet Touch Technology to keep the screen responsive in wet conditions. The company cautions against immersing the phones in water and says its warranty does not cover liquid damage from immersion.
Both models feature a 6.9-inch display with 1600 x 720 resolution and a refresh rate that adjusts between 60Hz, 90Hz and 120Hz, reaching up to 825 nits in high brightness mode. The display carries three TÜV Rheinland certifications for low blue light, circadian-friendly viewing and flicker-free performance, along with DC dimming.
The REDMI 17 runs on the MediaTek Helio G91-Ultra, while the REDMI 17 5G uses the Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 Mobile Platform. Both support up to 12GB RAM through memory extension, which draws on the phone’s internal storage, and up to 2TB of expandable storage via microSD card. The phones run Xiaomi HyperOS 3.
Camera capabilities include a 50MP main camera with an auxiliary lens, an 8MP front camera and dual-view recording from the front and rear cameras at once. Both models have dual stereo speakers with what Xiaomi describes as a 300% volume boost, which the company says refers to 17 volume levels compared with 15. The phones also retain a 3.5mm headphone jack and FM radio, with NFC available in some markets.
The series introduces a redesigned exterior with a flat display, matte frame and a Dynamic RGB Light system that lights up for calls, notifications, charging, gaming and camera use. Both phones measure 8.8mm thick and weigh 232g.
The REDMI 17 starts from USD 179 and comes in four storage variants (4GB+128GB, 4GB+256GB, 6GB+128GB and 6GB+256GB) and four colours: Black, Deep Blue, Oak Green and Lotus Purple.
The REDMI 17 5G starts from USD 249 with three storage variants (4GB+128GB, 4GB+256GB and 6GB+256GB) and three colours: Black, Deep Blue and Vivid Orange, the last with a PU leather finish.
