Gulu, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Catholic Bishops in Northern Uganda have described the Late Pope Benedict XVI as being a great teacher of catholic doctrines.

Pope Benedict XVI formerly Joseph Aloysius Ratzinger, died on Saturday at the age of 95. He had lived for nearly a decade at the Vatican after resigning from his papal position in 2013.

The Bishops who said that they had a close relationship with Pope Benedict celebrated him for being open to consultations. They said that he was a researcher and doctor of the church who helped many of them during his tenure as the Pope. They described him as “an eminent theologian and conservative enforcer of the Roman Catholic Doctrines.”

The Archbishop of Gulu Archdiocese, His Grace John Baptist Odama described Pope Benedict as a scholar and theologian who loved science.

He implored people across the world to emulate the Pope instead of mourning him.

Bishop Sabino Ochan Odoki of Arua Diocese who was appointed by the late Pope says he was a theologian who received consultations from even the current Pope.

“When he was elected, I was sure that Ratzinger Joseph will be the next Pope and by then I was a rector in the seminary. I said we need a strong teacher and Pope Benedict has been a strong teacher,” he said.

Bishop Sanctus Lino Wanok, the ordinary of Lira Diocese who was also appointed by Pope Benedict XVI believes that the world has lost a giant of not only the Catholic Church but humanity as a whole.

Pope Benedict XVI was the head of the Catholic Church and sovereign of the Vatican City State from 2005 until his resignation in February 2013, becoming the first Pope to resign since Gregory XII in 1415. His funeral will be held on Thursday in St. Peter’s Square.
