Acid victims cite Injustice in Courts of Law

Kampala, Uganda | GODFREY SSALI | Acid attack survivors stormed Nakawa Chief Magistrates Court demanding the bail granted to Kyambogo University Lecturer James Kazungu, who is on trial for pouring acid on his Lover’s face be cancelled.

The victims clad in White T-shirts with words “Together for an acid free Violence Uganda” say that much as bail is a constitutional right to a suspect, it however exposes the victim and the entire public to danger because the perpetrator is out on the loose.

They want Kazungu returned back to jail, and that specific reforms should be put in place by government to strengthen laws regulating the buying and selling of acid and other toxic substances.

On Monday two more prosecution witnesses, Emmanuel Ojura and Amule Grace testified against Kazungu , who also implicated Kazungu before Court for attacking Angole with acid in October last year.

James Kazungu Alupo teaches at the faculty of Civil engineering and is facing charges of domestic violence and attempted murder of Judith Angole Dirisi who was an accountant with Africa Innovations Institute.

On 17, March 2018, Angole testified that after the loss of her husband in 2011, Kazungu approached her claiming to have been a best friend to her late husband and even offered to help her with the feeding and education of herthree children.

She narrated that in 2014, they started living with Kazungu at Kirinya Bweyogerere but he failed on his responsibilities on top of running extra-marital affairs.

That on the fateful day of October 28, 2017, Angole opted to end the affair and resorted to move out of the house, which decision Kazungu did not welcome and around mid-night, as she came back home from her supermarket in Kireka, Kazungu poured acid on her face, that has since turned her blind and disfigured her entire face, breast, thigh and arm.

The matter has been adjourned to 18, April 2018 for further hearing by Chief Magistrate Jamson Karemani.
