Busia, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | 2,146 teachers and non-teaching staff in Busia district have been vaccinated against Covid-19. The district received 5,169 doses of AstraZeneca and Sinovac vaccines targeting more than 5,000 people.

Dr Mathias Wabwire Panyako, the Busia District Health Officer says that out of the 2,146 teachers, 346 have received their first dose while 1,800 have been fully vaccinated.

According to Wabwire, three vaccination centres have been set up at Busitema University, Lumino high school and Busia S.S.

Mathew Tusubira, the Busia Deputy Resident District Commissioner-RDC says that they have opted to mobilize teachers and non-teaching staff to embrace the vaccination.

Aggrey Mayende, the headteacher Busia Secondary School says that he completed the second dose of Covid-19 last month but didn’t experience any side effects.

Harriet Mwesigwa, the acting Busia District Education Officer says they are also sensitizing teachers to desist against spreading false information about the vaccine.

Mwesigwa says that once schools re-open, only vaccinated teachers and non-teaching staff will be allowed to access school premises. She says the vaccines are enough for teachers.
