107 people killed in Luwero last year

Luwero district recorded 73 cases of homicides

Luwero, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Atleast 107 people died from unnatural causes in Luwero in 2020, the annual district crime report has revealed.

According to the district report, road crashes claimed 25 lives, 13 died in mob justice, 6 people committed suicide and 2 people were poisoned.

The report further reveals that 4 people were killed in domestic violence while 51 others died unnaturally but police didn’t specify the circumstances.

The Savannah regional police spokesperson Isah Ssemwogerere says that 75 cases remain under inquiries, 16 cases put away, 16 suspects charged, 37 cases remain under Resident State Attorney and 16 are pending in court.

The Annual Crime report for 2020 has put Luwero district in sixth position with the highest number of homicides across after it recorded 73 cases compared to 70 cases reported in 2019 and at eighth position in cases of shooting after it recorded six cases.

Some people were killed in mob justice over theft, robbery attacks, land and domestic wrangles among others.

Joseph Serugo, the vice chairperson of Luwero district says the cases are alarming but these could be averted if there was vigilance and sensitization of masses.

Serugo explains that the 25 people who were killed in accidents could have been saved if there was increased sensitization of road users and enforcement of traffic laws to stop reckless driving on the road.

There are also calls by residents led by Katikamu North Member of Parliament Denis Sekabira calling for Uganda National Roads Authority to erect humps in black spots to reduce death along the Kampala-Gulu highway.

Erustus Kibirango, the LC 5 chairman elect of Luwero district says he personally attended burial of three people who were killed in land wrangles.

Kibirango says that land wrangles can be stopped if there is good will from police and the government.

He has since met the Resident State Attorney and asked her to handle the land cases with care citing the increasing number of murders over dissatisfaction from the residents.

Patrick Kisekwa, the district councillor for Makulubita sub county says that one person was stabbed to death in land wrangles near his home located in Kitemasanga village on Easter last year.

Kisekwa says that land wrangles are source of murders in the district and government should address the matter if the cases are to reduce.

“People have lost trust in the judicial system and resorted to killing one another over over land,” Kisekwa said.
