Iganga, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Police in Iganga district on Sunday afternoon arrested 27-year-old Shakira Nakato, a resident of Nampirika A village in Nakalama sub county over stealing a one-month-old baby boy from Betty Namale.

It was on Friday afternoon when Nakato approached Namale claiming that she could connect her to a Sheikh who would safely circumcise her boy free of any cost.

The duo walked together with the baby towards the mosque where the Sheikh was meant to circumcise the boy from.

On arrival, Namale went out to ease herself but on returning, Nakato had already taken off with the baby.

Namale says that she alerted village members who told her how Nakato had escaped using a waiting motorcycle.

Namale now explains that Nakato had been frequenting her home and showering her with endless gifts, which had prompted her to think that she could even trust her with the child.

“Ever since I gave birth, people from different walks of life have been paying me courtesy visits,” she says. “But Nakato whom I didn’t know very well kept on coming around, she always gifted my son with new clothing and also helped us with general home chores but I didn’t know all along that she had been scheming to steal my son from me.”

On her part, Nakato confessed to the crime claiming that she had aborted early this year, however, her boyfriend is demanding for their child before marrying her.

“We had a bitter split with my boyfriend and I resolved to abort his six months pregnancy in February this year without his consent, however, we reconciled in May and he promised to marry me only if I present our child,” she says in her statement to the police.

The Busoga East police spokesperson James Mubi says that Namale was hiding in a makeshift house within the same area when she was arrested attempting to flee.

Mubi adds that the suspect is currently detained at Iganga central police station and she will face two counts of stealing a child and impersonation.
