Kampala, Uganda  | THE INDEPENDENT | Uganda Cranes and the Nigeria Super Eagles played to a draw in a closely contested international friendly match  at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, Delta State on Tuesday

The well attended clash was a perfectly contested physical duel that witnessed either sides create goal scoring opportunities but with tight defence lines. Uganda marched on without captain Denis Onyango, and striker Farouk Miya.

Uganda Cranes were denied a first half penalty when Jamilu Collins brought down Allan Kyambadde, while Derrick Nsibambi volleyed wide an over head kick inside the goal area in what seemed a great opportunity for Uganda Cranes.

Captain Emmanuel Arnold Okwi and Moses Waiswa also attempted at the Nigerian goal in vain.

Nigeria’s Ahmed Musa, Alex Iwobi and towering John Ogu were kept under check by the Ugandan defence of Nico Wakiro Wadada, Godfrey Walusimbi, Timothy Denis Awany, Denis Iguma and goalkeeper Salim Jamal.

The introduction of Ibrahim Sadam Juma, Patrick Henry Kaddu, Allan Kateregga and Milton Karisa for Tadeo Lwanga, Derrick Nsibambi, Allan Kyambadde and Moses Waiswa failed to break the deadlock

The high profile friendly comes just three days after the Uganda Cranes qualified for a second straight African Cup of Nations finals, by beating Cape Verde 1-0 in Kampala on Saturday.

The match was also played hours after a shock result for Uganda’s Under 23 team in the Olympic qualifiers. South Sudan won 2-0 in Juba to advance to the next round 2-1 on agregate.
