Two arrested over fuel theft in Kitgum

Kitgum, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The police in Kitgum is holding two suspects for alleged theft of fuel from a wheel loader belonging to China State Construction Engineering Corporation Ltd. The firm is undertaking the construction of the Kitgum main market under MATIP 2 project.

David Aisu, the Kitgum District Internal Security Officer identified the suspects as Ronald Zemuswa, the operator of the wheel loader and Eddie Watmon, a boda boda cyclist.

According to Aisu, security acted on a tip-off from concerned residents of Oryang cell in Pandwong division of Kitgum municipality who found the suspects siphoning the fuel on Thursday. Aisu says although the wheel loader driver tried to elude arrest, they managed to track and apprehend him and his accomplice. He adds that a total of 120 litres of fuel were recovered.

The suspects are currently being held at Kitgum central police station pending investigations.

Zhang Shaung, the supervisor of the China State Construction Engineering Corporation Ltd commended the residents and security personnel for their vigilance. He adds that the theft of the fuel had affected the construction of the market.

According to Zhang, the incident barely comes days after a suspect was arrested stealing construction materials from the market.
