Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The Uganda Prisons Services-UPS has said the suspects in the assassination attempt of Gen. Katumba Wamala are currently undergoing treatment at Kitalya prison where they were remanded last week. Last week, the five suspected people who are allegedly connected to the shooting that led to the killing of Gen. Katumba’s daughter and his driver displayed torture wounds at the Nakawa Magistrates court. The suspects reportedly sustained the wounds while under police detention.

The suspects currently detained include; Muhammad Kagugube, Siriman Kisambira, Abudallah-Aziz Ramadhan Dunku, Kamada Walusimbi and Habib Ramadhan Marjan. They were charged with terrorism, murder and attempted murder before being remanded to Kitalya until August 13, 2021.

Frank Baine, the spokesperson of the Uganda Prisons confirmed that the suspects are currently undergoing treatment. He said the prison’s medical team has embarked on treating the suspects.

He further explained that whereas the Prisons Act stipulates that the officer in-charge of prisons should not take the responsibility of handling the severely beaten prisoners, in this case the situation is manageable.

“In the discretion of the OC, it was and is still a manageable situation. According to the OC and his team, the situation of the suspects was not causing alarm,” said Baine.

Although security has been in the spotlight over the torture of the five suspects, Fred Enanga, the police spokesman said that Ugandans should understand that people who were arrested are involved in high criminal cases of terrorism and murder and cannot be arrested in the same manner to other ordinary crime suspects.

Gen. Wamala Katumba, also the Minister of Works and Transport was shot and injured while in his army vehicle by armed assailants riding on motorcycles on June 1st 2021, along Kisota road in Kisaasi. However, daughter Brenda Nantongo and driver Haruna Kayondo were shot dead by the assailants.
