Wakiso, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Police in Namugongo Division within Kira-Municipality Wakiso on Friday rescued a suspected thug from the hands of charged residents after being suspected of being part of the gang group that raided Namugongo Nsawo zone on Thursday.

According to the residents, the group moving on boda-boda, armed with rudimentary weapons such as knives, hammers, and other breaking instruments raided shops and restaurants that were still open at around 11:00 pm.

Michael Ssendawula, the chairperson of Nsawo zone Namugongo, said the group of unknown thugs, with one wearing a suspected army uniform and others with their faces covered were surrounded by residents at the restaurant of one Patience Kyobutungi.

“They had raided more than three shops stealing money. These people made an alarm that gathered people, we found them at the restaurant of Kyobutungi. They were demanding her to surrender all the money in her possession. Two took-off, but we apprehended one.” Ssendawula said.

He explains that Police covered in and rescued the unidentified suspected thug, from the hands of the charged residents who were plotting to lynch him. Ssendawula is calling upon security beef-up in the area.

One of the victims Kyobusigye, narrates that she was surrounded by three men with their faces covered and demanded her money, in objection; they grabbed her and started struggling with her, before people’s alarm.

Some of the residents said Namugongo is becoming a haven for thugs. They appeal for a security beef up during the festival season which tends to escalate the situation.

The Kira Police Division, Senior Superintendent of Police-SSP Brighton Ahimbisamukama, confirmed the arrest of one suspect, as the hunt for more accomplices on the run continues.

Last Week, Police Spokesperson Fred Enanga, said that Police will jointly enhance security within Kampala Metropolitan Areas during this festival season.
