Aswa River Region Police Spokesperson David Ongom Mudong confirmed report.

Amuru, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | A suspected rapist has been hospitalized after being shot and injured by Amuru District Police Commander Joseph Nsabimana during a scuffle on Wednesday.

Nsabimana reportedly shot Jerome Oloya on the right arm while trying to subdue him after being caught attempting to rape a teenage girl. The incident happened near Olwal trading center in Lamogi sub-county, Amuru district at about 7:20pm.

According to police, Nsabimana had responded to a lady’s loud cries from a nearby bush while on his way traveling along with the Amuru District Prisons Commander. It is reported that when the officers stopped to check what was happening, they found Oloya strangling a 16-year-old girl.

Aswa River Region Police Spokesperson David Ongom Mudong says that the security officers first warned the suspect but he ignored the warnings.

Mudong says when Nsabimana drew his pistol to warn the suspect, he instead attempted to grab it, prompting him to discharge a bullet that hit the suspect on his right arm. He says the suspect fled the scene with his injuries through a maize plantation but was nabbed kilometers away seeking medical attention at Olwal health center.

Mudong notes that the suspect was transferred to St Mary’s Hospital Lacor in Gulu City for medical, adding that he is being guarded to avoid him from escaping.

According to Mudong, police detectives have established that the suspect who has been operating with gangs in Olwal center and Lamogi sub-county had previously defiled and impregnated the victim but forced her to abort.

He says the suspect has been hiding to avoid arrest adding that on the fateful day of the shooting, police established that he had intentions of killing the girl to the alleged defilement case and abortion.

Police have preferred charges of attempted rape on the suspect as further investigation continues.

Meanwhile, in Pader district, the police are holding a 27-year-old Uganda People’s Defence Forces soldier Genesis Ocero Nangai on charges of alleged aggravated defilement of a 13-year-old girl.

The suspect attached to 8th Mountain Battalion Butama in Bundibugyo district allegedly defiled the minor last week in Latuturu parish, Pajule town council, after luring her to his house. The suspect is being detained at Pajule Police station where a case of aggravated defilement has been opened against him under reference CRB 059/2022.
