Suspect found hanging in Kira road police cells

ASP Luke Owoyesigyire

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT  |  There was panic at Kira Road Police Station on Friday morning when a suspect was found hanging inside his cell. Venus Busingye was dragged to the Station on Boxing Day after he was found in the compound of someone’s home in Kikaya in Kisota zone.

The Deputy Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire, said Busingye was taken to the police by the security guard and a tenant from the house where he was found wandering without any reason.

Owoyesigyire said police interrogated the suspect to understand how he had accessed the home but in vain. Busingye explained that he had just found himself there and couldn’t remember how he had accessed the home.

Owoyesigyire says it was at this moment that police decided to lock up the suspect hoping to interrogate him further this morning since it was already late.

Police have since recorded statements from those who dragged Busingye to Kira Road Police Station as part of the investigations to establish what could have prompted him to terminate his life. Busingye is believed to have been a resident of Kyebando in Kampala Central Division.

Efforts to get details of the people who took Busingye to the police station were futile as police couldn’t provide their contacts. Before he was locked up, Busingye told police that he was coming from Namugongo, Kira Municipality, Wakiso District, heading to his home in Kyebando.

This isn’t the first time a suspect is found dead in police cells this year. Two months ago, a similar incident happened in Namayingo District, where a suspect identified as Denis Mukulu, was found hanging dead inside Shanyonja Police Post cells in Buyinja Sub-county.

He had been arrested on theft charges. Last year, a police officer was found hanging dead at Mawanda Road police station in Kamwokya. He had been arrested as the god father of motorcycle robbers at Kabalagala Police division.

Police identified the deceased as detective James Ogwal, who was attached to Kabalagala Police Station. Bodaboda robbers told police that under the shield of Ogwal they would kill and rob Boda-boda riders across the country.
