Tororo, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | George Olowo, the Nyangole sub county LC III chairperson in Tororo district, has suspended operations in the one stop trading center in Mudodo parish, prompting traders to operate in their homes and bushes.

The move has affected over 34 shops and 15 stalls. Olowo decided to close the one stop trading center citing the lack of sanitary facilities. According to Olowo, the traders had resorted to defecating in polythene bags and dumping them in the nearby bushes and the roadside.

Olowo notes that there is no way he will allow such confusion in a place where locals go and buy food from.

He said that he will only allow the trading center to operate again only if the traders are able to show their clients where they can go for convenience.

Some traders are up in arms against the closure of their shops. Solomon Ochieng, one of the traders says that he had just stocked bread and other perishable commodities minutes when the chairperson announced the closure.

Josephine Aketch, a fresh food vendor is now operating in a nearby bush where her customers can easily find her. Richard Ondur, a pork butcher says that the chairperson closed the trading leaving him with over 40kgs of pork.

“I want the chairman to compensate my 40kgs of pork because he never warned us of the move earlier. He is also aware that we are not the landlords of the building he closed, why makes us suffer?” asked Ondur.
