Soroti city mayor sets focus on unity, economic empowerment

Joshua Edogu taking an aoth today.

Soroti, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT |  The new Mayor of Soroti City, Joshua Edogu has said that his first assignment is to create a working environment for the technical and the elected leaders.

His comments follow the poor working relationship that existed between the interim city mayor, Paul Omer and the acting city clerk, Moses Otimong.

Omer accuses Otimong of undermining his political privileges and entitlements which allegedly frustrated his office and work in addition to openly taking sides with a political party. Otimong on the other side accuses Omer of failing to understand the established laws guiding his operations.

As a result, some of the councillors, initially in Soroti Municipal Council also took sides, making operations in the council difficult. The recent bickering ensued after the creation of Soroti City when councillors accused Otimong of blocking their allowances and other entitlements.

Now Edogu says he will ensure service delivery. He notes that development can only be realized when all parties work together.

Edogu, who has also been the sub-county chairperson of Soroti East Division in the former Soroti Municipality administration says he wants to create room for economic empowerment of the people of Soroti City that will enable them to improve on their livelihoods and support the government by paying taxes.

He also pledged to build a partnership with other development agencies to ensure that Soroti City grows.

Edogu was sworn in alongside 16 councillors who will steer Soroti City Council for the next five years.
