Kiboga, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The Police Crime Intelligence is holding seven suspects in Kampala for their alleged involvement in vandalising electricity transmission lines mainly in Kiboga District.
The suspects are Ronald Ssemaganda, Abdul Matovu, Lawrence Musoke, Obadia Matovu, Ashraf Turyatemba, Michael Niwamanya and Martin Mugiri.
The suspects were picked up in joint security led operation following complaints of vandalism in Kiboga district and its neighbourhoods, which left the area in a blackout for two weeks.
Police spokesperson, Fred Enanga, says operatives tracked the suspects from Kiboga district to Kampala in Kayiwa zone in Lubaga Division where they were found selling their loot over the weekend.
He says that during the operation, Police raided about 10 stores where they recovered electric cables, metals, surge restorers and other expensive gadgets worth billions of Shillings.
The recovered items include among others 1460 pieces of 50millimeter bio-metal clamps, 3480 pieces of real insulators, 840 pieces of parametric insulators, 5646 pieces of 60millimeter PG clamps and 510 surge restorers.
According to Enanga, the suspects face a string of charges. “We’re going to charge them with cases of being in possession of suspected stolen items, malicious damage and theft, conspiracy to steal because we believe it is still a big racket behind such acts and the operations are continuing,” Enanga said.
He has called on power distribution company UMEME to come up with more stringent measures to protest their equipment from thugs.
