A political activist from Bunyoro Kitara Rodgers Kanti has asked the Constitutional Court to quash the appointment of Security Minister Lt Gen Henry Tumukunde, saying a previous conviction made him ineligible for cabinet.

Kanti’s petition states that that Tumukunde was in 2012  convicted by the Makindye General Court Martial for a crime involving moral turpitude and sentenced to a caution.

Through Rwakafuuzi and Company Advocates, Kanti now wants the court to declare Tumukunde’s appointment a nullity. The petition was filed against the Attorney General of Government who is yet to respond to Kanti’s claim.

According to Kanti’s petition,  Tumukunde should not have held any public office within seven years from his conviction, as stated in Article 80 and 113 of the constitution.

Tumukunde was appointed minister this year, four years after the conviction.
