Private security guard held for shooting dead civilian in Rukungiri

Rukungiri, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | A private security guard attached to Millennium security company Rukungiri branch is under Police detention for allegedly shooting dead a 22-year old man.

Nicholas Ainembabazi is said to have shot Kenneth Masanyu, a resident of Kyobugombe village, Kamahuri parish, Rugarama North sub county, Ntungamo district on March 5th, 2024 at around 10PM.

According to Eria Tumwesigye, the security company manager, while Ainembabazi was on night duty guarding the Julius Kazaire’s home and banana plantation in Rugoma village, Southern division, Kebisoni town council, Rukungiri district, he intercepted Masanyu who was around the area to visit his relatives.

It is reported that as Masanyu was walking from his uncle’s home Charles Bitomwe to sleep at the nearby grandmother’s home Bitama Feredansi Bitama, he failed to locate the path and ended in Kazaire’s banana plantation where he was intercepted by Ainembabazi.

As Ainembabazi commanded him to sit down for interrogation where he was going, Mazanyu defied. In the process,  Ainembabazi shot him dead.

Elly Maate, the Police spokesperson for Kigezi region confirms the incident saying that Ainembabazi is being held at Rukungiri Police station as investigations into the matter continue.

Maate says although Masanyu defied the orders to sit down, Ainembabazi should not have shot him dead. The deceased’s body is lying at Rwakabengo Health Centre III mortuary for postmortem.

The case is registered at Rukungiri police station under file number CRB: 259/2024.
