President Museveni to attend Tooro King’s coronation

Fort Portal, Uganda | URN | President Yoweri Museveni has confirmed that he will attend the coronation of Omukama Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I of Tooro Kingdom as the chief guest on September 29. State Minister for Gender and Culture Mary Kamuli Kutesa announced the President’s confirmation, saying his acceptance to attend adds significance to the coronation ceremony.

Kamuli said preparations are underway to ensure the ceremony is successfully held and called on the people of Tooro and members of the public to attend and witness what she described as a historic event for the kingdom. Fr Charles Oyo, the head of communications for the coronation organising committee, told Uganda Radio Network that preparations are progressing well, with the various committees meeting regularly to finalise arrangements.

Oyo said the fundraising drive to raise Shs925 million required to finance the coronation is also progressing, with the organising committee receiving both cash and in-kind contributions from individuals, companies and other well-wishers. He appealed to the people of Tooro and other well-wishers to continue supporting the coronation activities and prepare to participate in the celebrations.

Richard Rwabuhinga, the head of protocol for the organising committee, said the ceremony is expected to bring together leaders from traditional institutions across Uganda and other parts of the world. He said politicians, businesspeople, heads of diplomatic missions, distinguished dignitaries and members of the public have also been invited to attend.

Prince Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I was selected as the new King of Tooro by a 21-member committee of the Babiito royal clan following the death of Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV. His coronation is scheduled for September 29 at Karuziika Palace in Fort Portal City.
