Police to escort presidential aspirants to the nomination venue

IGP Martin Ochola issued the new guidelines per Electoral Commission ahead of today’s nomination.

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | All presidential aspirants will be escorted by the police personnel from their intended set-off venues to the nomination centre at Kyambogo University. This is according to letters sent by the Inspector General of Police Martin Ochola to all persons who have been cleared for nomination.

In the letter, Ochola informs the candidates that they will be picked by police and escorted with lead cars to ensure that their travel is not disrupted. “You will be escorted by Uganda Police Force with a lead traffic vehicle/motorcycle to the nomination venue with your team as per Electoral Commission guidelines,” reads Ochola’s letter.

At least 10 aspirants are expected to be nominated between today Monday, November 2, and Tuesday, November 3, to participate in 2021 presidential race. Incumbent President Yoweri Museveni will be the first to be nominated at Kyambogo cricket ground at 10 am, followed by former security minister Lt Gen Henry Tumukunde at 1 pm.

Police spokesperson Fred Enanga confirmed to Uganda Radio Network that aspirants will be picked alongside their entourage to the nomination centre as recommended by the Electoral Commission.

Ochola also reminded aspirants to ensure that they follow the routes that have been reserved by police from their set off centres up to the nomination venue. “Uganda Police Force has made a traffic plan for  the nomination day exercise. This is meant to enable you travel to and from the nomination venue,” Ochola adds.

This comes hours after Ochola through operations director AIGP Edward Ochom warned aspirants against causing chaos before, during and after nomination. Ochola said joint security teams have been deployed to ensure no incidents of criminality and violence occur as aspirants head or return from nomination centres.
