Buliisa, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | More than 30 people have this morning been critically injured in a crash along the Hoima Biiso-Butiaba-Wanseko road in Buliisa district.

The accident occurred when a Fuso lorry registration number UAP 038X carrying over 50 traders together with their merchandise from Masindi town heading to Bugoigo market in Buliisa district, lost control and veered off the road overturning several times.

The accident happened at the Butiaba Escarpment in Butiaba sub county at around 11am. Most of the passengers appeared to have sustained broken legs and hands.

UPDF Marine brigade and traffic police immediately rushed and evacuated the injured victims to Biiso and Butiaba health centers, while others were rushed to Masindi and Hoima hospitals in critical condition.

Sarah Nyakirya who was in the Fuso truck told URN in an interview that the driver of the vehicle failed to negotiate a sharp corner prompting the vehicle to veer off the road overturning severally. She adds that the driver was speeding at the time of the accident.

Nicholas Aliganyira, the LC5 councilor for Biiso sub county who rushed to the accident scene regretted the incident saying several accidents have occurred at the same place.

He says two months back, a truck belonging to the office of the prime minister-OPM that was delivering relief items to Buliisa flood victims was involved in an accident in the same place.

He has cautioned drivers plying the Hoima-Biiso-Wanseko road to be extra careful especially at the Butiaba escarpment which he says has got very many sharp corners.

Julius Hakiza, the Albertine region police spokesperson has confirmed the accident adding that they are currently hunting for the driver of the Fuso lorry who is on the run.

He says police preliminary investigations indicate that the accident was by reckless driving and overloading.
