Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Mukono district chairman Rev Peter Bakaluba Mukasa has appointed Asuman Muhumuza, a member of the National Resistance Movement-NRM, to deputize him as he starts his term of office under the National Unity Platform.

Bakaluba told the first sitting of the Mukono district council after the swearing-in ceremony on Tuesday, that his vice-chairperson Asuman Muhumuza will mirror representation of NRM supporters and the Muslim community in the district executive committee.

He explains that much as NUP won the majority positions at the district council, at this particular time when NRM is still steering the central government, harmonization under the local government is vital to guarantee service delivery to locals. The ruling NRM party won only six of the 42 councillor seats in the Mukono district council.

Bakaluba notes that he has prioritized among others improving the district road network, health centres, the water system, education and household incomes which need extra support from the the government then looking at the district budget whose biggest potion is allocated to wages.

The outgoing district chairperson Andrew Ssenyonga has expressed gratitude towards Bakaluba’s move for unity saying it sets the district on a better path for development. He says that often leaders tow selfish interests when they are entrusted with power and end up delivering nothing, even after promising too much.

Mukono Municipality Member of Parliament Betty Nambooze believes Bakaluba’s move of unity is intended to lobby and develop the district but not crossing back to the NRM. She however warns him to be vigilant while dealing with NRM top leaders saying they at times turn good intentions into evil ones.

Muhumuza, now the district vice chairperson notes that his appointment is a representation of almost all other party members in the district. He explains that he will mobilise support from the NRM party members within the district whenever it will be needed.
