Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | As Ugandan families adjust to the new school term, MTN MoMo is offering customers a 20% discount on back-to-school shopping as part of efforts to ease the financial pressure associated with returning to school.
The promotion, running from September 15 to 30, 2026, allows customers who pay through the MoMo App to access the discount at selected supermarkets, including Capital Shoppers, Shopwise, Fraine Supermarket and Cynabel Supermarket.
The initiative comes as parents deal with expenses that go beyond tuition, including school supplies, clothing, food and other household requirements associated with the beginning of a new term.
For Mary Muyama, a resident of Ntinda, the promotion provided an immediate financial benefit while shopping for her two children.
“I was surprised and happy to receive 30,000 shillings instantly after paying with the MoMo App at Fraine Supermarket. I was doing my school-term shopping, so getting money back immediately was a good saving. The process was simple and convenient, and it made me appreciate the value of paying with the MoMo App,” Muyama said.
The shopping promotion is part of MTN MoMo’s Term 3 “Win School Fees for a Year and More” campaign, which seeks to provide additional financial support to parents during the school term.
Under the campaign, parents who pay school fees through the MoMo App or by dialing 1658*0# stand a chance to win school fees for a full year, worth up to Shs6 million.
Eligible customers can also access school fees financing for up to four children, while digital payments provide parents with transaction records that can help them keep track of their school fee payments.
Keith Tukei, Chief Commercial Officer at MTN MoMo Uganda, said the campaign is intended to extend the value of digital payments beyond the transaction itself.
“Education is one of the biggest priorities for families, and the financial demands of a new school term go beyond school fees. Through our partnerships with retailers, we are using the convenience of digital payments to help families save on some of these everyday expenses,” Tukei said.
“We want customers to see MoMo not simply as a way to make payments, but as a platform that creates greater value around the things that matter to them,” he added.
The campaign also includes benefits for schools that accept school fee payments through MoMo.
MTN MoMo recently handed over a second school van to Jinja School of Nursing and Midwifery, following the first van awarded to Lucky Kids Academy in Bweyogerere.
Schools that accept school fees through MoMo stand a chance to benefit from the school van component of the campaign.
The initiative reflects the growing use of digital payment platforms to connect financial transactions with consumer offers and services. For MTN MoMo, the retailer partnerships provide an avenue to link school-related spending with its wider digital financial services offering.
Tukei said the shopping discount gives families another option for managing beginning-of-term expenses while demonstrating how digital payments can be used to deliver additional benefits to customers.
Customers can access the 20% discount by paying with the MoMo App at Capital Shoppers, Shopwise, Fraine Supermarket and Cynabel Supermarket until September 30, 2026.
