Man held over machete attacks in Makindye division

Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire confirmed report.

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The police in Katwe division have arrested a man alleged to be the mastermind of five machete attacks in the Katwe-Makindye division.

Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire says that Joshua Akanyijuka, a 30-year-old resident of Nkere zone in Katwe, was arrested following the recent attack and murder of a two-year-old child in Kanakurya zone.

Within this month, two children have been killed by suspected machete-wielding assailants terrorizing Makindye division. Three other victims are nursing injuries in Mulago hospital.

According to police records, the first incident was registered on October 5, when Sharmin Nansamba, a 10-year old daughter of Ssalongo Asaddu Ssembatya was attacked and cut by unknown people. Nansamba is still undergoing medical treatment at Mulago intensive care unit.

On October 9, a four-year-old Tracey Nakanwagi was hacked to death and her body dumped near her parent’s house.

Two weeks ago, Aisha Nakitende and her daughter Olivia Namatovu were hacked and are admitted to Mulago hospital.

Owoyesigyire says that the police are still hunting for Akanyijuka’s accomplices.

Muhammad Konde, the Defence Secretary Nkere attributed the crimes to the laxity of the police in the area.

“Police have not helped us, they do not patrol these areas at night. We have people who keep walking in this place throughout the night and we cannot stop them”, Konde said.
