Makindye stone quarry kills four

Kampala Metropolitan deputy police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire confirmed report.

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Police have confirmed the death of four people in a stone quarry in Bukasa in Makindye division in Kampala city.

The Kampala Metropolitan deputy police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire says the quarry caved in and buried the four men on Tuesday afternoon while excavating stones.

The deceased are Mugisha alias Salongo, a casual labourer, Justus Ainebyona and 2 others only identified as Prosper and Kevin, all residents of Bukasa zone.

Preliminary findings by detectives from Kabalaga police station who visited the scene show that the stone quarry that belongs to Sam Musoke Ssekindi, who is also the area chairperson was softened by the previous heavy rains.

Owoyesigyire says that a team of police officers led by the officer in charge Kabalagala station responded to the scene and worked with the local community to retrieve the four bodies from the rubble.

Owoyesigyire said the deceased’s bodies have been conveyed to the city mortuary at Mulago for postmortem as the investigations into the incident continue.

“The investigation in this incident is still ongoing, but we would like to inform the general public that the stone quarry is currently a danger to the public and no one is encouraged to come close to it,” said Owoyesigyire.
