Kasese LCV chairperson sets sights on education fund

Kasese district council was on Wednesday fully constituted to start conducting business

Kasese, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT |  The new Kasese LCV Chairperson Eliphaz Muhindi Bukombi has said that he will focus on the creation of an education fund to help disadvantaged children.

Bukombi says that last year’s floods greatly affected the learning  in the district citing many parents who lost their businesses among other properties and are unable to support their children back to school.

He says the education fund will also help schools whose structures were destroyed are still struggling to accommodate learners.

According to Bukombi, a team will soon be identified to discuss how the funding will be raised and operationalized.

To boost food production at the household level, Bukombi said the district together with the government will financially support the creation of mini-irrigation schemes to help farmers.

He reasons that many farmers have been planting crops along the major river banks because they lack alternative sources of water. Bukombi said his five year leadership will also focus on creating jobs through the utilization of government programs and harmony among the different communities in Kasese.

Bukombi appointed Ithungu Getress as the Vice-Chairperson.

Ithungu becomes the second woman in the district appointed Vice Chairperson after Naume Mbambu during the tenure of Lt. Col. Dura Muhindo Mawa in 2011.

Ithungu who is also the woman councillor representing Bwera and Nyakiyumbu Sub Counties said their leadership tenure will focus on empowering young girls to access both formal and informal education.

She says the district has lagged in social transformation because many youths have not had a chance to acquire life skills.

Rogers Masereka, the Kyabarugenda Sub County councillor said given the many challenges facing learners in Kasese, it is vital that the council adopts the chairperson’s proposal to create an education fund.

Obed Totswana and Nelson Masereka from the NRM party were elected council speaker and deputy respectively on Wednesday evening.

Totswana who is serving his third term representing Buhuhira Sub County says he will focus on uniting all sides of the council dominated by NRM and FDC parties.

Kasese council has a total of 76 members.
