Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Housing Finance Bank is strengthening the integration of sustainability into its financing, governance and commercial decisions as it seeks to build long-term value for customers, businesses and the wider economy.
The Bank’s sustainability drive has been reinforced by its certification under the Sustainability Standards and Certification Initiative (SSCI), marking progress in its efforts to embed responsible and sustainable business practices across its operations.
For HFB, however, the certification is not the end goal. The Bank says it is using sustainability as a framework for making longer-term business decisions, managing risks and directing capital towards activities that support economic and social development.
Its Board Chairperson Annette W. Kihuguru said sustainable growth must be considered alongside the value a financial institution creates for the wider economy and the communities it serves.
“Sustainability is not our destination. It is the way we choose to grow,” Kihuguru said.
She said the approach is shaping the Bank’s focus on financial inclusion, enterprise development, affordable housing and responsible operations, while encouraging the institution to consider the longer-term effects of its financing decisions.
“As a Bank, we cannot build lasting success in isolation from the communities and economy we serve. Sustainability requires us to look beyond immediate results and ask what kind of value we are creating and whether that value will endure,” she said.
As a financial institution, HFB’s economic influence extends beyond conventional banking transactions. Decisions on where and how the Bank deploys capital can determine which businesses receive financing, whether households can access housing and the extent to which enterprises can expand and create economic opportunities.
The Bank therefore sees sustainability as increasingly linked to its commercial strategy rather than as a separate corporate responsibility programme.
HFB Managing Director Michael K. Mugabi said integrating sustainability into the Bank’s business strategy can strengthen both its financial performance and long-term resilience.
“For us, sustainable growth and strong financial performance are not competing ambitions. Done right, they reinforce each other,” Mugabi said.
He said the approach enables HFB to take a longer-term view of growth while identifying emerging opportunities and managing risks associated with changing economic, environmental and social conditions.
“It influences where we direct capital, the businesses we finance, the customers we reach and the role we play in Uganda’s economic transformation. Sustainability has to move beyond policies and reports and become part of how we make commercial decisions,” he said.
The Bank’s sustainability agenda is being implemented alongside its wider focus on affordable housing, financial inclusion and enterprise development, areas HFB considers central to Uganda’s economic transformation.
Through financing and other banking services, the Bank seeks to support households seeking housing, businesses looking to grow and customers who remain underserved by formal financial services.
The approach comes as financial institutions face increasing pressure to demonstrate how their operations and financing decisions contribute to economic resilience while managing environmental and social risks.
For HFB, the SSCI certification provides a foundation for strengthening these practices, including improving how sustainability outcomes are measured and ensuring responsible business principles are incorporated into its strategy, operations and stakeholder relationships.
Mugabi said the Bank intends to treat sustainability as a continuous process rather than a one-off achievement.
“Sustainability is a journey of continuous progress, responsible choices and meaningful impact. Our SSCI certification marks an important milestone in this journey, recognising the progress we have made and our commitment to doing better, every day,” he said.
