Hoima, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Herdsmen have raided Hoima district headquarters raising concern among residents about the trend which threatens the operations of the district staff.

On a daily basis, several herdsmen flock to the district headquarters which seats on a 10-acre piece of land in Kasingo cell, Hoima West Division to graze animals. The area is now filled with cow dung and covered with a foul stench, yet the back side of the building is bushy.

Several area residents now suspect that the district leaders could have hired the area to the herdsmen since no action is being taken against them. Godfrey Tumwesigye, a herdsman who was found grazing more than 20 cows at the district headquarters says he has spent seven months grazing cows in the area.

He adds that he was compelled to graze from the area after he found other herdsmen freely grazing from the compound of the district headquarters.

Junior Kamugisha, another herdsman who was also found grazing at the district headquarters says they were attracted by the fresh pasture in the area, yet the rest of the town is dry.

Richard Atuhura, a resident of Kasingo cell wants the district leaders to explain why they allowed herdsmen to graze animals in the compound of the district headquarters. He equally wonders why the district failed to fence off the premises to prevent intruders from accessing it.

Patrick Rusoke, the LCV councilor for Buraru sub-county describes the development as unfortunate. He too demands an explanation from the district leadership on why they have allowed the herdsmen to take over the compound.

Hoima District Council Speaker Swaibu Nyangabyaki maintains that the act is illegal adding that the matter will be handled soon to ensure that the herdsmen are ejected.
