Hoima driver dies in suspicious suicide

Albertine region police spokesperson Julius Hakiza confirmed incident.

Hoima, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Police in Hoima are investigating circumstances under which a prominent driver appears to have committed suicide by hanging.

The deceased driver has been identified as Issa Mugisa, 40, a resident of Bwikya ward, Hoima East division, Hoima City, at the same time a driver operating at Kinubi stage in the same division of Hoima city.

It is alleged that the deceased went missing from his home on Monday this week and since then, he had not been seen, causing suspicion among his fellow drivers and the area residents.

The area residents together with his fellow drivers immediately rushed and reported the incident to Hoima police.

Julius Hakiza, the Albertine region police spokesperson says police together with the area residents launched a man hunt for the deceased only to find his lifeless body hanging in an incomplete house near his home.

Police picked the body that was later taken to Hoima city mortuary where it is currently lying.

Iddi Mageza, a driver at Kinubi stage who doubles as the Hoima East Division Councilor wonders why Mugisa decided to end his life yet he had no misunderstanding with any one in the area.

Suspicious suicides are not new in the sub region. In May 2021, a suspect allegedly committed suicide at Isunga central police station cells in Kagadi district.

The suspect was identified as Geoffrey Matala, a mechanic and a resident of Kisegya village in Isunga sub-county of Kagadi district. Matala had been arrested for allegedly stealing a motorcycle. He was found dangling in the police cells after he used a piece of blanket to commit suicide.

At the time of the incident, there were five suspects in the cells, however it is not clear how he committed suicide in the presence of the suspects.
