Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Heavy rains on Wednesday blew off the roof of the Equity Bank branch in Kawempe.

Traffic was paralyzed for more than two hours as parts of the roof blocked the Kawempe-Bombo road.

Traffic police, the fire brigade arrived and were assisted by residents to remove the debris from the road.

Vendors in Wekembe market which is opposite the bank said that fortunately, no person was injured by the flying debris.

Sharif Lugonvu, one of the vendors working in Wekembe market which is opposite the bank says that the building occupied by the bank needs to be refurbished.

The staff of Equity bank declined to comment on the incident. Some were seen struggling to remove some of the debris that had blocked the entrance of the bank.

Badru Wakumi, a vendor at Wekembe market says that the incident should be a wake-up call to KCCA who allowed the erection of a billboard near the market. Wakumi says that the billboard is a threat to the lives of the vendors and wants it relocated.

Luke Owoyesigyire, the deputy Kampala police spokesperson said that no person was injured and police came in very first to save the situation so that traffic can flow.
