Gulu police constable arrested over missing gun

Gulu, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Police in Gulu city are holding one their own over a serious matter of a missing sub-machine gun.

Police Constable Peter Akena, a bodyguard attached to the Gulu City West Division Member of Parliament-elect and outgoing Gulu district LC 5 chairperson, Martin Ojara Mapenduzi lost his gun at about 03:00 pm on Monday.

The incident reportedly happened at Goans’ Quarters sub-ward, Bardege-Layibi division.

Shortly after, Akena reported a case of gun theft to his superiors at the District Criminal Intelligence Investigations Department.

Aswa River Region Police Spokesperson Patrick Jimmy Okema confirmed the matter. He told URN in an interview on Tuesday that the officer reported that upon returning to his place of abode, he discovered that the gun No. UG POL 84MA1790-22655 with 30 rounds of ammunition (a full magazine) was missing.

According to Okema, Akena was immediately detained to help with further inquiries into the matter on charges of theft gun and neglect of duty vide Gulu CRB 302/2021.

He added that Scene of Crime Officers – SOCO have been dispatched to investigate the matter.
