Gen Muntu to speak on Museveni’s threats

By Julius Odeke

The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party boss Gen Mugisha Muntu will on Thursday address the press on the statements made by President Yoweri Museveni that the army would not allow the confusion in parliament to continue.

Gen Muntu, the former army commander was elected into office to head the FDC party on Nov 22, 2012. His victory has been interpreted by political analysts as a threat to president Museveni’s candidature come 2016.

President Museveni made these remarks while at Kyankwazi addressing his party legislators on disciplinary issues concerning the ‘rebel MPs’ in his party who have failed to tone down.

FDC spokesperson Wafula Oguttu says Gen Muntu “Will be saying something hard to the press on the recent threats by Museveni.”

Dr Kiyonga emphasized the possibility of the military stepping back into political control should the politicians continue “not showing seriousness that they can solve the problems facing the country.”

Dr Kiyonga was re-echoing the comments he recently made to the Parliament’s committee on rules and privileges.

“I told my colleagues that, you know friends we are building democracy so that our country’s stability will not be challenged again in future, we have to give confidence to the population that democracy is good, that democracy will work for them, that we, the leaders are serious,” said Kiyonga.

Earlier on Col Felix Kulayigye told The Independent that the army is obliged to restore the constitution of Uganda whenever some people want to go against it.  “It’s our duty as the army to keep and protect the constitution of Uganda.”

However, the NRM caucus spokesperson Evelyn Anite denied that the president made that statement adding that, “What President Museveni said was that he does not want hooligans to take over power following the confusion that is in parliament.”
