FPU impounds 839kgs of immature fish from Kame valley market

Mukono, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The Fisheries Protection Unit-FPU has impounded 839 kilograms of immature fish from Kame valley market in Mukono Central Division.

A team of officers led by Lt. Benard Baingana, the Commandant of FPU operations in Mukono and Kampala districts stormed the market accompanied by officers from Mukono district fisheries department on Wednesday afternoon.

Baingana explained that they have been receiving numerous tips from concerned citizens about the dubious deals of immature fish happening in Kame valley market.

He says that they impounded 839kgs of immature fish, which they have handed over to Kauga prison. The unit has also established a committee in the market to monitor and report the dubious deals happening in the market.

Deo Sentiba, the Spokesperson of the Fisheries Protection Unit appeals to vendors operating in the market to report such dubious deals to the unit as a way of supporting the fight against illegal fishing activities. He also appeals to boda boda riders operating inland to report their colleagues transporting immature fish.

Geoffrey Sserunjogi, the Kamey Valley Market Chairperson says that those dealing in immature fish smuggle it into the market under the cover of darkness. He explains that the dealers conceal the fish for fear of inspection by the inspectors.
