Buganda Road Court has ordered the former Old Kampala DPC Joram Mwesigye to defend himself against charges of assaulting a WBS TV journalist Andrew Lwanga.

Grade One Magistrate Gladys Kamasanyu ruled that when she perused the evidence of  the six prosecution witnesses, she found it sufficient to put ASP Mwesigye on his defence, since there was a case to answer.

Mwesigye faces three counts including assault, occasioning actual bodily harm and other two counts of malicious damage to property.

Prosecution says on January 12, 2015 along Namirembe Road and Bakuli in Kampala, Mwesigye unlawfully assaulted Lwanga and damaged his video camera  plus that of another Bukedde TV journalist Joseph Ssetimba.

The two journalists had been assigned to cover a  peaceful demonstration of jobless youths who were marching to present a petition to  the IGP’s office.

Lwanga sustained spinal injuries from the said assault and he is since walking on crutches.

Magistrate Kamasanyu on Friday adjourned the matter to December 7,  by which the accused officer should report back prepared with his side of the story.

Mwesigye is out on bail.
