Jinja , Uganda | Julius Businge |  Eskom Uganda has improved Jinja city after investing Shs233million in lighting up the area.

It said in notice shared with The Independent that it had handed over 31 solar streetlights, installed on Gabula Street to the Jinja City leadership.

This investment is part of the shared value initiative by the power generator, whose objective is to improve communities where it operates.

The investment was done in partnership with Absa Bank Uganda Limited.

“Eskom Uganda is pleased to partner with the leadership of Jinja City to make our city safer and easier to live and work in,” said Eskom Uganda Managing Director, Thozama Gangi. “This is a shared responsibility, and I am glad for the progress,” she added.

The self-standing solar powered streetlights were installed after engagements with Jinja City Council, having been identified as a solution to increasing theft cases during the night.

The project was carried out by Power Trust Limited, a Ugandan Company.

Jinja City Deputy Mayor, Midius Asiimwe appreciated Eskom for the continuous partnership.

“I know that we have long term friends in Eskom. You have not only supported us in fighting crime and beautifying the city, you have also been lifelong partners in health, education, sports and the environment,” Asiimwe said.

In the same notice, the company said, it had invested approx.9.2billion (US$2.5m) in communities in Jinja, Buikwe and Gulu since 2003 in key focus areas of the environment, sports, health and education.
