Debate continues over Kipchoge silence on new marathon record holder

Kelvin Kiptum

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Kenyans online wondered about the silence of star marathoner Eliud Kipchoge after his marathon world record was broken by Kelvin Kiptum, a fellow Kenyan athlete.

Social media users rushed to offer congratulatory messages to Kiptum after he set a new marathon record of 2:00:34 at the Chicago marathon. However previous record holder and two time Olympic champion Kipchoge has not congratulated Kiptum publicly sparking speculation that Kipchoge was not happy with being upstaged by a novice. “Kelvin Kiptum has written a new chapter in Marathon history, winning the Chicago Marathon in a majestic, staggering and mind-boggling time of 2:00:35,” Kenyan President William Ruto wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

A week later, Kipchoge was yet to say anything publicly to Kiptum given how public his success has been as an athlete. Ironically, Kipchoge’s mantra is “no human is limited” something he adopted after running a marathon in less than two hours in 2019.
