Rukungiri, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The Church of Uganda has issued a roadmap for the election of the new Bishop for North Kigezi Diocese in Rukungiri district.

The new Bishop will replace the late Bishop Rt. Rev. Benon Magezi who succumbed to Covid-19 on June 15 from Mulago National Referral Hospital.

After his death, Emeritus Bishop Patrick Tugume was appointed caretaker of the Diocese.

In a letter released on Tuesday and signed by the Church of Uganda Provincial Secretary, Rev. Canon William Ongeng and addressed to Rt. Rev. Tugume, the caretaker Bishop is required to constitute the diocese synod. The synod will elect other relevant committees including the Diocesan nominations committee.

According to Ongeng, the Diocesan nominations committee is directed to submit two proposed names to the office of the Archbishop by April 8, next year. Nomination of two names is required not to go beyond March 22, next year.

Ongeng says that the processes leading to the election of the Bishop should begin on September 1.

Bishop Magezi was consecrated and enthroned as Bishop of North Kigezi Diocese on January 8th, 2017 at Emmanuel Cathedral, Kinyasano, Rukungiri. Before his death, he had launched a major fundraising campaign to expand the Cathedral and the church’s ministry in the Diocese.
