Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Kampala Lord Mayoral aspirant Joseph Mayanja alias Chameleone has asked the National Unity Platform-NUP to reconsider its position and hand him the party flag for the 2021 polls.

He made the request in a letter presented by his campaign taskforce chairperson Samuel Lubega Mukaaku at a press briefing at his campaign offices along Balintuma road in Rubaga.

Mayanja’s request comes a day after NUP’s preferred candidate Latif Ssebagala Ssengendo declared his decision to step down from the lord mayor race citing conflicting interests in the party and for the good of the wider opposition forces.

Mukaaku argues that Ssebagala’s decision to step down from the race after being handed the party ticket strengthens their demand for the party to correct what had gone wrong.

Mayanja’s campaign manager Henry Lubowa has also tasked the NUP leadership to publicly share the score sheet used to vet their candidate.

This stems from statements by the NUP spokesperson Joel Ssenyonyi indicating that the score sheet that was doing rounds on social media indicating that Mayanja was dropped because of religious grounds is fake.

The NUP elections management committee chairperson Mercy Walukamba couldn’t comment saying she was locked up in a meeting to discuss election petitions.
