Car plunges into Kazinga channel

Kasese, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | A vehicle has plunged into Kazinga channel in Katungura at the border between Kasese and Rubirizi district. The Toyota Probox vehicle registration number UBD 512Y was from Rubirizi crossing to Kasese district when it plunged into the channel on Tuesday afternoon.

Currently, both vehicles and travellers are using a ferry to cross between the two districts because of the ongoing works at Katunguru bridge. According to eyewitnesses, the driver failed to brake when he was getting on the ferry and plunged into the channel.

Moses Alinaitwe, one of the workers at Kazinga channel said the driver failed to control the car at the signal of the ferry controllers. Cerean Bainomugisha, the acting Rubirizi District Police Commander blames the accident on brake failure.

He says that fishermen and police marine managed to save the driver’s live on time. He says that they have teamed up with UNRA to remove the vehicle from the water.

The Rubirizi Resident District Commissioner, Harriet Nakamya says they have intensified monitoring to ensure all vehicles with questionable mechanical conditions are not allowed on the ferry.

Solomon Ahimbisibwe, the project engineer at Katunguru bridge has called for vigilance when loading vehicles on the ferry.
